I am a Lawyer – Rights Activist!
Rights activist in a wrong(ed) world!

The ideal world is not a place for a rights activist. In the utopian world, governments would be doing their job, citizens would be following their obligations, and words such as breach and violation would exist in dictionaries and history textbooks alone. But then, (snap back to reality), the world is not ideal, neither are its citizens nor its leaders. So, sadly, a rights activist has a lot of things to do to set this world straight.
You must have always heard about how law is a powerful tool to help the oppressed and wronged people. Also, about how lawyers can help the society in a way that no other professionals can. These lawyers are your rights activists. They are people who use the legal system to advance the rights of people, animals, nature etc. Struggle against violations, and ensure access to justice for all. Their work includes conducting litigation in public interest, engaging in advocacy, running helplines, conducting legal awareness programmes, sensitising the judiciary, investigating violations and deploying crisis-intervention teams, planning People’s Tribunals, publishing materials to advocate and enlighten people about rights, participating in campaigns, and proposing solutions to some of world’s foremost social problems.

Different areas of advocacy include:
-Child rights advocacy like Kailash Satyarthi
-LGBT rights advocacy like Ashok Row Kavi
-Environmental advocacy like Medha Patkar and M.C. Mehta
-Animal Rights advocacy like Maneka Gandhi
-Women Rights advocacy like Flavia Agnes or even Lalithambika Antharjanam
Taking up advocacy as a profession is like taking up a lifelong vocation. One has to be completely dedicated to the cause, passionate about putting in endless hard work and be content with the fruits of one’s hard work which will be reflected through the change that one is able to create in the society. Material benefits will be low in most cases, though established Non Government Organisations like Greenpeace, Commonwealth, C.R.Y and different projects of the U.N. do give competitive monetary benefits.
Rephrasing the first sentence of this article – The world today is an ideal place for rights activists!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ― Margaret Mead
